Start with the unit approach

Control the entrance to the yard, not just the opening width

On an industrial estate, the gate often sits between shared estate roads and your own yard or parking. It has to leave room for vehicles to wait, turn and clear the opening without blocking neighbours or the public highway.

Viables is one of Basingstoke's industrial estates with yards, depots and car parks to secure. We survey how traffic reaches your unit, where deliveries stop, and how staff leave at the end of the day — then size the commercial driveway entrance around that movement.

Automated Openings is based in Southampton and covers Basingstoke, including Viables. Your free site survey establishes the dimensions and constraints before the design is agreed.

Vehicle routes on a working site

Match the gate arrangement to how the unit is used

Staff cars, courier vans and occasional larger deliveries do not all need the same path. We discuss those routes before fixing the appearance of the gate.

01 / SWING

Keep the swing clear of the yard

Swing gates need space behind them. On a Viables unit we check marked parking, fencing, walls, loading bays and any slope before recommending hinge and motor positions for the commercial driveway.

02 / SLIDING

Hold a clear run for working vehicles

Sliding and cantilever gates can keep a wide opening free when the yard needs a straight run in. Ground conditions and support requirements are assessed at the survey.

03 / PEOPLE

Keep pedestrians off the vehicle line

Where staff walk in separately from vehicles, a pedestrian gate or side access can reduce conflict at peak times. Its position and controls should be planned with the main entrance.

Built for the opening

Manufacture the gate for commercial duty

We design and manufacture steel gates for the agreed commercial opening. Height, construction, posts and finish are considered with the automation, so the entrance can take regular daily use.

Scale to the frontage

Discuss how the gate sits against posts, fencing and the building line. The design should suit the unit entrance and how it is used, rather than forcing a standard size into the gap.

See-through vs solid panels

Tell us where drivers need visibility into the yard and where screening helps. Detailing affects construction and weight as well as appearance.

Construction & finish

Our steel gates are made to the agreed design. Pattern, construction and finish are confirmed before manufacture, with the gate's weight and intended commercial operation in mind.

Prepared for the operators

Hinges, motor mounting points and clearances are considered during design. The gate needs to move correctly before the automation can do its job.

Who opens the gate, and how they leave

Decide access for staff, visitors, deliveries and contractors. Remotes, keypads, fobs and intercoms can suit different users on a commercial driveway; a GSM intercom can let someone answer and release the gate from a phone.

We check reach from a vehicle, exit routes and where power can be supplied. Automation is specified for the gate and its commercial use, with appropriate safety equipment.

If suitable gates are already fitted, we can assess condition, hinges, posts and movement for automation rather than assuming a full replacement. Every installation is fully risk assessed before handover.

From your brief to handover

From Viables survey to tested handover

01 / Survey

Measure the entrance, discuss your priorities and assess access, levels, ground conditions and power.

02 / Agree the design

Confirm the gate arrangement, appearance, construction, finish and access controls, with a quotation for the agreed work.

03 / Make & install

Manufacture the gates, fit the equipment and set up the controls and safety devices for the entrance.

04 / Safe handover

Fully risk assessed before handover, with force testing, safety checks and guidance on operating the gates.

At handover we explain the controls and provide operating and maintenance information and force-testing readings. Gates are fully risk assessed before handover. Arrange professional servicing at least every six months, with attention to the gate movement, controls and safety devices.

Before the design is agreed

Planning your Viables unit entrance

What should we photograph for the survey?

The opening, the yard or parking behind it and the boundary on both sides are useful. Include any existing gates or posts, and tell us whether you need new gates, automation or both. We confirm measurements on site.

What do we agree before manufacture?

The opening dimensions, gate arrangement, design, construction and finish, alongside automation and access-control requirements. The quotation sets out the agreed work so the gate and equipment can be planned together.

We share estate roads — does that affect the entrance?

Often. The survey looks at how vehicles wait and turn between the estate road and your unit so the commercial driveway entrance does not block neighbours or departing traffic.

Can different users have different access?

Yes. Staff, visitors and deliveries can use different controls — for example fobs for regular users and an intercom for callers. We recommend what suits the site after seeing how people arrive.

Is this the same as your Basingstoke gates page?

No. That page covers several Basingstoke industrial estates and other work across the area. This page is specifically about commercial driveway entrances and electric gates for premises on Viables Industrial Estate.

What happens after installation?

The gate is fully risk assessed before handover, with force testing, safety checks and guidance on the controls. Keep the operating information available and arrange professional servicing at least every six months.
