Safety Systems and Gate Health Check

An automatic gate is a heavy, powered machine that moves by itself, often right where people walk, cars pull in and children play. Our safety systems and gate health check shows you whether your gate is working safely, and what it's likely to need next.

We carry out health checks at homes, businesses, industrial sites and managed residential blocks across Hampshire, Dorset, Surrey and Berkshire, whoever installed the gate. We can check barriers and bollards too.

A pair of double gates counts as one gate. Barriers and bollards can be checked on the same visit.

What the health check covers

  • Force testing. We use a force tester to take readings of how hard the gate presses against anything in its way, and check those readings are at a safe level.
  • Safety edges and photocells. We test that each device does its job, stopping or reversing the gate when it should, and look for damage, wear or poor alignment.
  • Remote handsets, keypads, intercoms and GSM units. We check that remote handsets and keypads open the gate, that intercoms work, and that GSM units respond and operate the gate as they should.
  • General condition. We look over the gate, posts, hinges, motors and controls for wear, corrosion, damage and anything else that could cause trouble.

Why it's worth checking

Most safety problems aren't obvious. A photocell gets nudged out of line, a safety edge splits, or the gate starts pushing harder as its parts wear. The gate still opens and closes every day and looks perfectly normal, but it may no longer stop when someone is in the way.

Whoever owns or manages an automatic gate is responsible for keeping it safe for the people who use it and walk past it, whether that's your family, your staff, residents or visitors. A regular check is a practical way to look after them, and the paperwork gives you a record that it has been done.

What you get afterwards

Once the check is finished, you get paperwork confirming it was carried out, together with a written report. The report covers two things:

  • any defects, or parts that need work to bring the gate up to the legal standard
  • parts that are wearing and are likely to need replacing soon, so you can plan and budget for them

If anything needs repairing, we'll quote for it. You decide what happens next.

Keeping your gate in good order

Automatic gates should be serviced at least every six months. If you'd rather not keep track of it yourself, we can set up a maintenance contract. Each one is tailored to the site, with visits every six months or once a year depending on the equipment and how much it's used.

If your gate has already stopped working, see gate repairs and emergency call-outs.
